All great journeys begin with a single step…mine is no different! We all have that thing we wish to do but something holds us back.
All great journeys begin with a single step…mine is no different
I have been thinking about writing a blog for quite some time. Fear and insecurity always got in the way.
What do I have to write that would interest anyone? What makes me so special that someone, besides my mother, would want to follow me? How would I write a blog that would be any different than anyone else? Am I knowledgeable enough?
Like many of you, I hesitate, over think, procrastinate, and make excuses. Well the time has come..it’s now or never!
Baby Steps
A few weeks ago, I signed up for an online event to learn more about online crochet businesses. Pam Grice, owner of the Crochetpreneur Business Academy https://crochetpreneur.com, was holding a multi day how-to on just that. I signed up, listened in, and learned so much.
The courses covered a myriad of topics, from marketing, blogging, packaging your product, branding your business, and so much more. There were too many speakers to mention, some of which I knew from online, and many I had never heard of.
At first, I was overwhelmed with all of the possibilities…so many speakers and so much to learn. Where to start? Who should I listen to?
Pam recommended that you just choose two or three topics that interest you and begin there. I had 24 hours to listen to the presentations for the day. I figured I could manage that. So it began.
The Rabbit Hole
I started with a presentation by Kim Anderson of Kim Anderson Consulting. https://www.kimandersonconsulting.com/ Her topic was blogging. I retreated into my sewing room with my computer, a cup of coffee, pencil, and a notebook….ready to learn!
I figured this was a great place to start….learn more about blogging! Kim was informative, relatable, and really appeared to know her topic. I was writing fast and furiously…page after page of notes. Next thing you know ,I was checking out her business online and signing up for a few of her courses! She made it seem like any thing was possible if you just do the work!
Next up I listened to Sarah Ruane of Ned and Mimi. https://nedandmimi.com/ Sarah is a crochet designer and blogger. She was presenting about multi purpose content. Who knew there was so much to learn about crochet content creation?? Again I was listening and taking notes…just trying to keep up. Good thing they were recorded so I could start, stop, go back and listen again!
Last but not least…I listened to Tamara Kelly of Moogly. https://www.mooglyblog.com/ I have followed her for a few years and love her crochet and yarn content. She spoke about collaborations. The possibilities are endless when it comes to collaborations with other makers, yarn companies, designers, and bloggers. Again….so much to learn!
The Takeaway
As I lay awake in bed that night, my mind raced. I realized that this blogging thing was a possibility after all! I knew I would have a lot to learn but it would be achievable with a little hard work, education, and planning!
The last month or so I have done endless online research. I have been checking out what others are writing about and how they are saying it. Content creation, websites, hosting, domain names, branding, business plans, LLC’s….you name it, I have researched it!
Just today as I was scrolling on Facebook, you know for research purposes, I came across a post I thought appropriate for this first blog. The author (I have no idea who she was) was stating “I didn’t start writing until I was 58, so if you have been thinking about it and putting it off…well…”
Just so happens that I am 58 and this quote spoke to me!
I believe this with all my heart..be brave…do the hard things! If not now…when??
So here I am making my dream a reality! One word at a time!
